Persistent Problem Spots

Problematic Spot
Even if you don’t have a weight issue, problematic fatty deposits are often very difficult to get rid of, even with intense dieting and work-out sessions. These can be conspicuous and prevent you from certain styles of dressing, or avoiding the beach altogether.

The Bane of Cellulite

Cellulite

Cellulite is usually present on the thigh and buttocks and gives the skin a dimpled appearance due to damage in the collagen fibres in the skin. Cellulite and stretch marks can appear in periods of sudden weight gain, during puberty, pregnancy or menopause.

It affects up to 80% of women at some point. Even though it can be combated with diet and exercise, it is usually difficult to eliminate its occurrence. A combination of non-invasive treatments can help in firming the skin and reducing the appearance of cellulite.

  • Hormonal changes
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of exercise

3 STAGES OF CELLULITE FORMATION

1ST STAGE FORMATION

Visible changes can only be detected when pinching the skin. At this point, collagen, blood and lymph vessels break down, reducing nutrients to the skin. Consequently, the epidermis gets dehydrated and begins to lose its elasticity. Fluid continues to build as well, weakening the dermis even further. The weakened dermal layer is unable to sustain the fat cells in the subcutaneous layer in place, and fat cells move upwards while continuing to clump together.

2ND STAGE FORMATION

2nd Stage of Formation occurs when hard cellulite is visible when standing up, but not when lying down. At this point, the fat cells in the dermis layers start to band together by fibrous connective tissue that hardens and continues to move upwards. This is in addition to the excess fluid accumulated that pushes the walls of the fat chambers upwards to create bumps on the surface of the skin.

3RD STAGE FORMATION

The 3rd cellulite level is hard and visible when an individual stands, sits or lies down. This is due to the dermis and epidermis breakdown such that they are unable to retain their shape. The banded fat cells continue to rise and create deformities on the skin’s surface which becomes impossible to eliminate without the help of combined laser and radiofrequency treatments.

Lower Body Slimming

The propensity for fats to be accumulated in the lower half of the body, is commonly seen in Singapore and Asia. These are the 4 main types of lower body slimming.

High sugar & gluten fat deposit: hormones interaction with our genes can change the body’s ability to process and break down gluten. Certain women suffer more from a sugary diet as they undergo puberty, menopause or hormonal imbalances. Fat is accumulated in the thighs, hips and lower belly areas, despite maintaining the same meal sizes.

Signs: Soft fat deposits around the hips, thighs, buttocks, lower belly and back.

Pot belly, is the result of anxiety and stress fat deposits. When the body produces cortisol it signals the increased storage of fats around the belly to combat “hardship”. Increased tendency towards snacking and high sugar foods is also common.

Signs: Soft fat deposit on the middle and lower belly.

Beer belly, also known as “Atheros genic metabolic obesity” is defined by a hard swollen and solid beer belly due to an accumulation of fat in the liver and upper stomach area. This condition is more common in men because of alcohol consumption.

Signs: Hard fat deposit on upper midriff.

Circulation related weight issues can be caused by constant standing or sitting down, which reduces the lymphatic drainage’s ability to remove toxins from certain parts of the body and increasing fat and cellulite deposits

Signs: Disproportionate calves, thighs and hips ratio to the upper torso. Skin is bumpy with the appearance of cellulite and unhealthy tone.

Post-Natal Weight Gain

New mums face a myriad of weight loss issues, most face some but not all the problems. Stretch marks are common in new mums as their bodies undergo tremendous changes both in size and hormonal fluctuations.
  • Overconsumption of calories: Many new moms have the assumption to consume twice the amount of food in order to provide nourishment for the baby, but in fact, the baby only requires 300 calories a day.

  • Water retention: The tissue, blood vessels and fluid accumulated in the body during pregnancy may remain inside until it is eliminated

  • Hormonal changes: It refers to hormonal imbalances whereby the fat cells are dysfunctional, causing changes to our metabolic rate

  • Stress: It triggers a chemical reaction known as cortisol that increases appetite and fat storage in our mid-sections

The average new mother will put on about 10kg after giving birth. They might lose this from breastfeeding. However, we notice that weight increases again when breastfeeding is stopped. So do manage your diet properly.

Unsightly Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are streaks or stripes on the skin caused by distension of the skin from obesity or during pregnancy. While some stretch marks naturally fade to faint, silvery lines, others remain darker and showier. The best time to treat the marks is while they’re still in the reddish stage.
  • Pregnancy
  • Weight gain

Unfortunately, there’s no way to prevent stretch marks. There’s no cream, lotion, or “mommy” balm will remove them.
